My Safari Notes. (my personal experience)
Italy welcomed us with open arms. The drive from Roma to Tuscania is absolutely breathtaking, so it took us a little longer than planned as we took photos and appreciated the beautiful countryside. Laura & Giorgio welcomed us to their home – a beautiful farmhouse situated overlooking valleys, a natural reserve & the village of Tuscania. When we arrived at the farmhouse a roaring fire was burning, which was toasty warm and lit up the room. We shared local wine and a tasty homemade cake while sitting in front of the fireplace and soaking up the heat. We immediately felt right at home…so relaxing. Our hosts invited us for dinner at a charming little pizzeria in Tuscania. We arrived in the village and we were immediately transformed, as it dates back around 3,000 years. We savoured antipasti with wine and several traditional thin-crusted Italian pizzas, with even more wine! The pizza was excellent, probably the best that I’ve ever tasted (we had several slices left over, but left them on the table as taking leftovers home is not something that is done in Italy). The dinner was delicious, as well as the conversation about life in Italy. The evening was topped off with a walking tour of Tuscania, taking us back in time. The narrow, winding cobblestone roads, ancient walls, towers and churches were lit up and looked spectacular at night. We could see the twinkling lights of our farmhouse in a distance across the valley. We returned and strolled to our room – we could hear the neighbourhood dogs barking across the valleys, the stars were amazing and it was a dreamy still night. Our room was very comfortable with all of the amenities and we had a great nights sleep in the double bed (2 singles together).

The next morning we awoke to a beautiful setting as the sun peeked through the clouds. We had a typical breakfast of coffee, toast, cakes, orange juice and homemade preserves. Laura makes the preserves from her garden produce and they are amazing – we tried carrot, pumpkin, quince and cucumber – I can now understand why Laura has started a little preserve business and why people would buy her preserves…yummy. The breakfast was served in a large room with individual tables draped with large checked tablecloths – very homey and decorated with antiques and other kitchenware. The kitchen is quite spacious and has all of the equipment that you could need. It’s well laid out and is a great place to learn to cook delicious Italian meals.

We then took a walking tour of the grounds – what a view, I immediately felt a feeling of peacefulness and serenity – you really are away from it all. We were now able to see the farmhouse – it’s a rustic dark terra cotta colour with vines growing on the outside. Everything was very lush and green with lavender and rosemary growing profusely – paradise – I will never smell rosemary again without thinking of this beautiful spot. We visited the 6 comfortable rooms, each with all the facilities and individual terraces to look out over the landscape facing the valley.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were made to feel very welcome – Laura and Giorgio are very hospitable and you feel it. It’s a piece of paradiso.

Safari Notes - Lasting Impressions

Dan Duran, Toronto, Ontario, January 2005

What a place to wake up to - the sunrise in the morning is spectacular.  I was reluctant to leave because I felt that I hadn’t seen enough, Giorgio and Laura are a wealth of knowledge about the area.

Ava E., Manila, Phillippines, October 2005

Dear jackie ,

I have seen quite a bit of Italy, it was wonderful...both Laura and Giorgio had only good things to say about you. it was a pleasure planning all of this with you, it turned out very well.  Thank you again , and all the best

Ava
